Gabdulla Tukay Literary Museum, Kazan, Tatarstan
G.Tukay Museum is located in the “Shamil
House” in the city of Kazan, architectures of which were Amlong and Rush. The House was built
by a merchant Ibragim Apakov for his daughter who married Mukhamet
Shafi.
Mukhamet Shafi, a retired major general of the Russian Army,
lived there till 1906. The basic periods of life and work of G.Tukay are
shown in the exposition opened in 1996.
G.Tukay rare memorial
belongings, his lifetime photographs, editions of newspapers and
magazines where he worked on, personal belongings and documents of
people from the poet’s surroundings are exhibited here as well as
materials of the age, ethnography and published works.
One part of exhibition is occupied by memorial belongings.
G.Tukay memorial collection consists of:
1. The photograph of G.Tukay taken in Kazan in 1908 for the poems collection at the instance of G.Sharaf, the book’s publisher.
2. The black velvet skullcap in which G.Tukay is taken on the photograph of 1908.
3.
The faience box bought by G.Tukay on his first author’s emoluments in
1908-1909. It was presented Gaziza Zabirova, his stepsister. The Museum
got it from her son.
4. The metal cup for pencils bought by G.Tukay
in St. Petersburg in 1912. The cup was made to St. Petersburg’s 200th
anniversary.
5. The wicker travelling basket of G.Tukay. It was
kept by M.Muzaphariya, a first Tatar poetess. The Museum got it from her
son, a composer M.Muzapharov.
6. Silver cuff links brought from
Austria and presented G.Tukay by A. Khasani, an editor of the magazine
“Аң” (“Consciousness”). In the 50th A.Khasani’s wife gave the cuff links
to an artist A.Nizamutdinov, then the Museum got it.
7. The photograph of G.Tukay taken on April, 1, 1913 in hospital 28 hours before his death.

The death mask of the poet. The origin of it is not known well. In 1958
Mulyukov, an inhabitant of Alma Ata, gave the mask to the Institute of
Language and Literature of TASSR Academy of Science after which the
National Museum got it. The mask was kept in the State Museum of the
Republic of Tatarstan for thirty years. Since 1988 it is kept in the
exposition of G.Tukay Museum.
The Unique Part of Collection consists of:
1.
The personal books of Zinatulla, Tukay’s grandfather, “The History of
Prophets” and the Koran with his notes and comments.
2. The
original editions of newspaper “Fiker” (“The Thought”), magazines
“Al-gasrul-djadid” (“The New Century”) and “Uklar” (“The Arrows”) where
G.Tukay worked on. They were published in Uralsk by Kamil Moutygi.
3.
The ethnography items: a lacy bedspread with appliqués; skullcap
embroidered with gold and flossy threads; female bag; kalphak, a Tatar
National hat; and Tatar breast collar. All the items were made by
sisters of G.Kulakhmetov, G.Tukay’s friend.
4. The first edition
of the magazine “Аћ” (“Consciousness”) of February 15, 1912 where the
poem “Probuzhdenie” (“Awakening”) is published. It was written
especially for the magazine.
5. The personal belongings of the members of the “Аћ” (“Consciousness”) magazine: inkpot, spirit lamp and others.
6. The photographs taken on the G.Tukay’s anniversaries in the USA and Finland.
7. The collection of works of G.Tukay published in 1933-1937 in Tokyo on the Tatar Diaspora initiative.
